"He was the smartest on the pitch!" — Chelsea Legend full of praise for special Chelsea star in AC Milan win.

The Chelsea Hero was full of praise for Reece James in the Blues' 3-0 shocking win vs AC Milan.

Joe Cole was ‘delighted’ with the progress Chelsea showed in their Champions League win over AC Milan and singled out ‘sublime’ Reece James for praise.

Chelsea recorded their first European win under Graham Potter on Wednesday night as goals from James, Wesley Fofana and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang saw the Blues outclass Serie A giants AC Milan.

2021 Champions League winners Chelsea lost their opening European game in Thomas Tuchel’s final match in charge and were held to a 1-1 draw in Potter’s first fixture as the new Stamford Bridge boss.

But Chelsea’s Champions League campaign kicked into gear with an emphatic win over AC Milan.

Cole told BT Sport: ‘There was a massive gulf in class between the two teams tonight. It was a routine win for Chelsea.

‘It was very disappointing from Milan actually because they threw the towel in towards the end of the goal. That won’t sit well for Milan fan.

‘It was so routine for Chelsea. To do that to an AC Milan shows we’re going in the right direction so I’m absolutely delighted.’

Chelsea summer signing Wesley Fofana put the Blues ahead midway through the first half before he was forced off before the break with an injury.

Fellow Chelsea new boy Aubameyang doubled Chelsea’s lead after half-time and James rounded off an impressive performance with a third shortly after.

‘But Chelsea were great, Reece James was sublime all night, there’s not enough superlatives for that man.

Former Chelsea forward Eniola Aluko added: ‘Reece James is so smart with his goal.

‘He waits for the overlap to happen and the strike is great. It’s such an intelligent finish. He was the best player on the pitch in the second half.’

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand, meanwhile, believes momentum is building at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea also coming out on top in Saturday’s Premier League game at Crystal Palace.

He said: ‘There was pressure on Chelsea tonight because they haven’t been great in the Champions League. You have to get the points on the board at home.

‘They didn’t just win, they were even able to rest some players towards the end ahead of this weekend’s game.

‘Momentum is key and they’re starting to build that I think. The crowd will be happy with what they saw today. It’s another step in the right direction.’

Graham Potter has succeeded in these three areas where Tuchel failed.

OPINION: Graham Potter has succeeded in these three areas where Tuchel failed.  The Blues were back in Premier League action on Saturday, and had sealed a 3-0 victory over Wolves at the Bridge.  The game had seen goals come from the Blues' attacking options, something which had rarely been seen in the Tuchel era.  Not just that, there were noticeable changes and improvement in team set up that were not seen under the former German Boss. All of which will be highlighted below.  Firstly, the handing of debut to Chelsea's signing, Carney Chukwuemeka. Graham Potter's choice to hand one of his starlets a debut demonstrates the trust that he has in the young players at Stamford Bridge that can help him through a tricky run. It's harder than it seems to just trust the youth though.  Tuchel struggled to fully implement the pathway desired and was always focused on the here and now, the short term. He felt warmth with experience. Potter already looks to have brough...
