Chelsea set to meet £104M release clause for Portuguese ace before World Cup deadline.

Chelsea are set to meet a concession with AC Milan for the Portuguese star's release clause to be lowered to £104M.

Chelsea have long been in contention for AC Milan and Portuguese forward, Rafael Leao.

Superagent Jorge Mendes is keen to lower AC Milan winger Rafael Leao’s release clause by €30m (£26m) to €120m (£104m), according to Calciomercato.com.

The representative of the Chelsea transfer target is currently locked in talks with Milan over a contract extension, which would see the Portuguese player’s salary increase from €1.5m (£1.3m) a year to €7m (£6m).

However, as part of the negotiations, Mendes is trying to get a “concession” that would reduce Leao’s buyout fee and consequently make a move away from the San Siro more likely next summer.

The Rossoneri’s technical director Paolo Maldini revealed last month that Chelsea did make an approach for Leao during the last transfer window, but it is believed that he would only have left if the existing €150m (£130m) clause was triggered.

The reason why Milan may well be open to lowering the release fee is due to the fact that the winger’s contract expires in 2024. If he doesn’t sign a new deal, the Serie A champions would have little choice but to sell for a much lower price next year.

Chelsea have been given a deadline until world cup to sort out all issues regarding Rafael Leao's possible transfer to West London.

Despite Chelsea's interest in the player, and the fact that pressure will be on Milan next summer as his contract enters it's final 12 months, technical director Paolo Maldini is not rushing to sort out a new deal, but there is a timeframe. “It’s true that clubs can chat, but we have not had any approaches after the transfer window closed. Now Rafa has to concentrate on this season and he’s doing it very well." the former Rossoneri defender said.

“We’d like to have the contract sorted before the World Cup, in fact we had hoped to get it done six months ago, but we need the right conditions. Our idea is to get it done before November 12, then we’ll see what happens."

Leao joined Milan just months after Maldini took up his role as director, signing for £26m from Lille.

Chelsea will be looking to meet Milan's release clause for Leao if they fail to extend his contract after the November 12 deadline.

Graham Potter has succeeded in these three areas where Tuchel failed.

OPINION: Graham Potter has succeeded in these three areas where Tuchel failed.  The Blues were back in Premier League action on Saturday, and had sealed a 3-0 victory over Wolves at the Bridge.  The game had seen goals come from the Blues' attacking options, something which had rarely been seen in the Tuchel era.  Not just that, there were noticeable changes and improvement in team set up that were not seen under the former German Boss. All of which will be highlighted below.  Firstly, the handing of debut to Chelsea's signing, Carney Chukwuemeka. Graham Potter's choice to hand one of his starlets a debut demonstrates the trust that he has in the young players at Stamford Bridge that can help him through a tricky run. It's harder than it seems to just trust the youth though.  Tuchel struggled to fully implement the pathway desired and was always focused on the here and now, the short term. He felt warmth with experience. Potter already looks to have brough...
