Chelsea eye two players as Mason Mount replacement if he fails to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea are reportedly eyeing two players as Mason Mount replacement should he refuse an offer to extend his Chelsea contract per The Telegraph.
Chelsea are looking at Roma’s Lorenzo Pellegrini and Villarreal’s Yéremy Pino as contingency plans as Mason Mount heads into the final 20 months of his contract at Stamford Bridge.Mount, 23, has one full season left on his existing terms and there is an expectation of him extending but it could take time, with talks starting over the summer and no agreement as yet.
Other options for attacking midfielders have been assessed during Chelsea’s exhaustive squad revamp over the summer, including Pellegrini and Pino.
Pellegrini, 26, is captain at Roma after starting at the Italian club and rejoining them after a spell at Sassuolo. He lifted the Europa Conference League last season and played in an advanced midfield role in the final against Feyenoord – similar to Mount’s – where he supported former Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham.
The Italy international has a long-term contract at Stadio Olimpico and would not come cheap but is admired at Stamford Bridge.
Pino is just 19 but has been on the radar of Premier League clubs after breaking into Villarreal’s team two years ago and eventually starting in the Europa League final victory over Manchester United that campaign. He also played against them last season in the Champions League and caught the eye despite United snatching a last-gasp victory at Old Trafford.
With a long-term contract until 2027, the teenager is expected to cost upwards of £40 million when offers arrive for a player who has made his debut for Spain last year.
Chelsea are expected to hold further talks to ensure Mount, who broke into the first team three years ago, stays at the club beyond the end of next season. Graham Potter has started him in his first four games since taking over from Thomas Tuchel, including this weekend’s clash against Wolves, signalling the midfielder's importance to his side.
