• Broja scored Chelsea's third goal vs wolves, credits Potter.
•Came off the bench after 70 minutes
•Will be pushing for a start against AC Milan
Broja came off the bench to replace Mason Mount and played the final 20 minutes of the clash at Stamford Bridge. He fired in his side's third goal, though his initial celebrations were cut short because of a VAR check, only for the goal to be given.
Broja has explained that Graham Potter was crucial to his Chelsea opener, and reveals the role the new Chelsea boss played with his encouragement:
"He [Potter] has come in, new, still getting to talk with each other. He seems like a very good guy, easy to talk to and get along with. He’s always encouraging and comes up to the players.
"If you ever need help, he will speak to you and help you out. He’s always telling me to be hard-working and for the opportunities I get, try to help out the team as much as possible." Broja added.
Speaking on the goal itself, Broja said:
"It's always a wait when they check for a possible offside," Broja said. "I was keeping my fingers crossed but I thought I had timed my run well. Thanks to the fans for the support. It’s unreal, I’ve been waiting for my first goal. It's a surreal moment. I can't put it into words.
"Everyone knows at one of the biggest clubs in the world there will be competition. It helps us all develop as players. We have a big squad, everyone is needed at all times."
Graham Potter meanwhile, has refused to take credit for Broja's goal. He said:
“I’ve been here three or four weeks so taking no credit, great finish, nice pass too and whenever he comes on he works hard for the team.
“He’s had to be patient but he’s been working hard in training and it’s nice for him to score.”
Broja has struggled for game time this season, with no starts so far. He has had to make do with cameo appearances off the bench. But, if the goal against Wolves was a teaser for what is to come, he may not be far away from starting games regularly.
With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the squad, the Gabon superstar will most probably be the team’s leading centre-forward this season. But, with the flexibility the 33-year-old has depicted of being able to do well even as a left winger, Potter can accommodate both Aubameyang and Broja in certain games. They can play as a front two as well.
For now, what the Chelsea academy product needs to do is to maximise the things he does in whatever time he is getting on the pitch. As a reference, he did well after coming on against Wolves and the goal he scored came as by-product of his decent cameo performance.
The Blues have a lot of games coming, hence the squad will be used to a full extent. Expect Broja to get more minutes to showcase what he is all about in the coming games.
Chelsea are next in action on Tuesday for the return leg of their Champions League group-stage fixture against AC Milan.
