"Stop playing players out of position!" - Tuchel warned as he hints on playing Sterling out of natural position.
Chelsea boss, Thomas Tuchel has come under fire from the Chelsea fan base after hinting on playing Raheem Sterling as 'false nine.'
Earlier this week, Raheem Sterling had revealed his favorite position as a winger, in his first Chelsea media briefing. Sterling had said:
"As you all know, my position is mainly as a winger, but some of the times, I enjoy floating about and getting on the ball. I always judge myself on how effective I am in the game. So it depends where I'll be most effective. Against Everton, I played as a false nine, and I'll always be happy where I can be effective and help the team."
Raheem Sterling flourished as a winger under Pep Guardiola, but could see his role switched under Thomas Tuchel as the Chelsea boss hinted on playing him as false nine in his pre-match briefing ahead of Spurs, when asked which position he would like to play Sterling:
" I think he {Sterling} should play in the last line or in between the defensive lines to drive towards the last line or run through the last line. He was very, very good in training in this free role as a number nine, dropping into half-spaces. It's such a lot of quality that there are many spaces to use for him.
"He can play from the wing, of course, he is used to playing there. He was very dangerous, had an offside goal and a big chance from number nine, which was more of a free role for him to play, and I liked it a lot. Things are not finished. He came late to our pre-season. One thing is clear, the kind of impact he has physically and mentally, in terms of quality, it's huge no matter where he plays." Tuchel told the club's official website.
Recall Sterling had played as false nine against Everton last week, and it could be his new role under Tuchel.
Mixed reactions have surfaced from Chelsea fans after Tuchel's hint on the 27-year old's new role in the Chelsea squad.
One wrote: "Sterling is not a number nine. We have players who are natural 'nines.' Allow the players play their natural role. This might cost you later."
"Please Tuchel should be sacked now before it's too late. How can he think this trashy? We have Kai and Broja, and then decides to use Sterling as false 9? He cost us a lot last season. He wants to start again." Another wrote, calling for Tuchel's sack.
"He did same with Pulisic, he kept playing him out of position. Havertz played well as false 9 but he's now playing him as a winger. Tuchel is ruining these players." wrote another.
"I DONT UNDERSTAND TUCHEL AND PLAYING PLAYERS OUT OF POSITION...SO THE REASON WE BOUGHT STERLING IS TO BE PLAYING STRIKING ROLE. WAIT WHY KEEPING BROJA THEN I MEAN I DONT UNDERSTAND THIS COACH. JUST TAKE A LOOK AT THE TOP 5 TEAMS IN ENGLAND WHICH OF THEIR PLAYERS IS PLAYING OUT OF POSITION?...THIS WAS THE REASON WE LOST TIMO W..R YOU HAVE A STRIKER U KEPT ON PLAYING HAVERTZ EVEN IN HIS WORST DAYS..AGAINST EVERTON I WAS JUST LOOKIN FOR HAVERTZ..WE NEED A STRIKER YET U NOT ENCOURAGING THE ONES WE HAVE..
"SERIOUSLY I BELIEVE IN BROJA A LOT NO DISRESTPECT TO HAVERTZ..IT HURTS ME A LOT THAT ALSO TUCHEL AFTER 3 SEASON WE DONT EVEN KNW OUR STARTING 11" Another wrote boldly.
Lastly, one opined: "TT you don't learn man ..... Stop playing players out of position, they end up performing very very bad and as fans we judge dem based on their performance."
However opinions clash, it is always believed that the coach knows best.
Raheem Sterling as false nine... what do you think, Blues?
